Why I love The Mean Kitty Song

I’m guilty of watching way too many cute animal videos on YouTube. It’s addictive. My favorites at the moment are:

Tillman, the skateboarding bulldog (I cannot believe the skill of this animal!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0

The showjumping bunnies (the owners take it sooo seriously) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNPOdffkkLo&feature=related

But the one I return to every time is “The Mean Kitty Song” (“Hey Little Sparta”) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qit3ALTelOo&feature=channel_page

“The Mean Kitty Song” makes me laugh out loud every time – and with more than 18 million visitors, I’m not alone. What works for me is: adorable kitty (Sparta); catchy tune; and cute guy (Cory Williams).

In real life I find it difficult relating to people who don’t love animals. It was love at first sight for me when I met my husband – not least because he spoke so fondly about his dog and his horse. In my books too, I could never have a hero who didn’t like animals and want them to be part of his life. In my romantic comedy, Love Is A Four-Legged Word, Tom finds Brutus the millionaire mutt less than appealing. But I establish straight away that he likes animals – just not this one, just yet.

Cory Williams is so sweet with Sparta – not just in this video but also in his other Mean Kitty videos. Sparta became so popular with YouTube viewers, he had to have a site of his very own. But handsome, funny Cory (he has Ricky Martin-type looks) is also a romantic. He proposes to his girlfriend Stephanie on video. Cheesy? Maybe. But the proposal seems genuine and the emotion real. I’m sure I’m not the only viewer looking forward to the videoed wedding. Cory Williams is my kind of romance hero!

But talking about emotion, Cory’s most recent posting about Sparta reports that the Mean Kitty has been diagnosed with feline leukemia. I know I’m not the only fan praying for his recovery…

WHAT I’M READING: I’m privileged to be friends with Avon author, Anna Campbell. Right now I’m engrossed in her latest Regency Noir, Tempt the Devil. Anna writes passionate, deeply emotional romance. In this book, the intense relationship between the secretive courtesan Olivia Raines and the jaded Julian, Earl of Erith, makes it an un-put-downable read. A happy-ever-after ending is a given with a romance, but in Tempt the Devil, Anna puts so many obstacles in the lovers’ way she has me turning those pages desperate to find out how it’s going to happen!

  1. Hi Kandy,

Congratulations on your gorgeous website, and the new contract. I have to say those photos of the puppy party are just too cute for words.

  2. Hey Kandy
I might sneak in here as your very first comment! How exciting! Of course if I keep dithering around here someone else will gazump me…

Love your website – so perfect for your book with those gorgeous little paw prints!

Popped over to visit your pet gallery – no wonder animals sneak into everything you write. You’ve got quite a menagerie there. They all look thoroughly loved and well-fed!

I’m looking forward to your release date – not long to go now.
    🙂

  3. Kandy,

Mega congratulations on the second sale! Can’t wait to get my hands on these stories. I love what I’ve read of your writing in the past and know these are going to be a huge treat. Animals, romance and food – how could I not love them?

By the way, I’m with you on Anna’s books. Tempt the Devil is a particular fave but they’re all great.

Congratulations too on the quirky, friendly site. Just purrfect.

  4. Hey, Kandy, thanks for the plug, my friend! It’s a long, hard road for Erith and Olivia until they get their happy ending – but rest assured, THEY DO!!!

What a gorgeous website. I just love it. Especially the pet gallery. More, please! And I just watched the Sparta video. I LURVE that cat! He’s not too bad either, LOL!

  5. Hi Kandy, from another animal lover.

Really looking forward to reading your first book – and that’s a great cover!

  6. Kandy, you’ve got another fabulous Paule Roe website. There’s a few of us around. 🙂

Congratulations on the second sale. It’s a wonderful feeling. I can’t wait to read your first book.

And I’m with you about people who don’t love animals, or at least aren’t kind to animals. I’ve got 2 cats and 2 dogs all previously abandoned and they are the light of our lives. My husband is so good with them. He wouldn’t be the man I love if he wasn’t.

    Enjoy your happy news.

  7. I just read your post on the RWA site about book two and had to come over and have a look. As soon as I saw the word ‘D-O-G’ I was hooked. I love dogs so much I created a special place for people who travel with their beloved fur-kids. You probably don’t get to leave all those animals behind too much, but if you and Molly ever travel north through the Coffs Coast, you must stay at Wagtail Cottage. I’d love to welcome you. Take a look and you’ll see my mutt is my muse. http://www.wagtailcottage.com.au

  8. Hello, Kandy!

    D. D. Scott here!

Your site is terrific fun! I haven’t seen any of the videos you mention, but can’t wait to check them out.

My RomCom BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS also features a few fabulous and fury, four-legged friends. My hero Zayne has a shelter-rescued dog named Studley Pete, and my heroine Roxy has two adorable Puggles named Dipstick and Darling. They’re all a hoot.

Can’t wait to read your new story and congrats on the sale!!!

I’m anxiously waiting for that first sale call from my agent…woohoo!!!

  11. Kandy,

I don’t know about you, but I have a handful of cherished authors whose books I just *know* I’m going to love even before they hit the shelves.

Having read a couple of yours now, you are one of those authors! Looking forward to many years ahead of sharing your warm, brilliant, funny and touching stories. Congratulations on your website and its wonderful four-legged friends.

PS Big thumbs up to Paula Roe, too. Love those pawprints.
